Dubai’s recent unprecedented rains and storms took the city by surprise and have left us with some challenges. After those rains, though it can be tempting to rush outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. It is essential to take care of your health, especially during this time when the environment can pose certain risks. At Al Ghurair Properties, your safety and well-being are among our top priorities. So, here are some helpful tips to ensure a smooth post-rain transition in your home:
Safety First
Flooding: The heavy rains have caused localized flooding in several parts of the city. Be cautious around underground parking areas or low-lying walkways. If you notice any water clogging within your apartment, contact your maintenance team immediately. Don’t walk, swim, or play in flood water as it may contain hazardous physical objects such as wood, steel, or glass, and even organisms that can cause illness. Exposure to this contaminated water can cause wound infections, rashes, gastrointestinal illness, and tetanus.
Slipping Hazards: Wet floors and walkways can be slippery. Walk with care, especially on tiled surfaces. Consider placing non-slip mats near your balcony doors in your apartment.
Electrical Safety: Avoid contact with any electrical outlets or appliances that may have gotten wet. If you suspect any electrical issues, turn off the main power supply and contact your maintenance for assistance.
Home Maintenance
Leak Checks: Post the rain, it is essential to inspect your windows, doors, and balconies for any leaks. Report any issues to your building maintenance team for prompt repair.
Air Circulation: Open windows and doors to allow fresh air to circulate and prevent moisture build-up, which can lead to mold growth.
Dehumidification: If you have a dehumidifier, use it to help remove excess moisture from the air, especially in areas prone to dampness.
Ensure Adequate Drainage: This is particularly important after heavy rains. Check balconies and patios for any standing water. Clear any debris that might clog drains or gutters that can affect the water drainage.
General Wellbeing
Mosquitoes: Stagnant water rain can attract mosquitoes. Empty any containers that hold water on your balconies and consider using mosquito repellants.
Instructions from Authorities. Follow any instructions or warnings issued by local authorities or school officials.
Practice Good Hand Hygiene. Rainwater can carry bacteria and contaminants. Wash your hands with soap and water after playing outdoors, especially before eating.
Clean & disinfect: After disposing of contaminated items, thoroughly clean and disinfect any surfaces, utensils, or containers that may have been in contact with floodwater to prevent the spread of bacteria and mold.
Be Mindful of Allergens: Rain can stir up pollen and mold spores, triggering allergens in some individuals. If you are prone to allergies, consider wearing a mask outdoors.
Monitor Your Health: Pay attention to any symptoms of illness or discomfort after being outdoors. If you develop a fever, cough, or other symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
Water Safety
Only use water from a safe source for drinking and washing or preparing food.
Use bottled water that has not been exposed to flood waters. If bottled water is not available, boil or disinfect the water.

Discard all contaminated and cardboard milk or juice boxes and home-prepared canned foods as this can't be sanitized.
